AFRICAN CONFLICTS IN THE ERA OF CORONA-VIRUS

The new buzzword in Nigeria, other African countries, China, USA, Italy, etc since February 2020 is Coronavirus (CoV)! The number of cases in Nigeria is increasing by the day. There is a prelude to total lockdown in Nigeria. The sit-at-home order by the Federal Government is taking effect. CoV is taking its toll on the economy. CoV has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO)!

On the 23rd of March 2020, Nigeria recorded her first death from CoV - 67 year old Suleimam Achimugu, former MD of Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), who returned from a UK trip two weeks earlier. As at the 24th of March 2020, the number of cases of persons who tested positive for CoV had risen to 46! Some of these citizens have no recent history of travel beyond the shores of Nigeria.

On the 17th of April 2020, 82 year old Abba Kyari, President Buhari's Chief of Staff, died 26 days after testing positive to CoV    https://thenationonlineng.net/covid-19-buharis-chief-of-staff-abba-kyari-dies.../ As at 18th April 2020, the CoV statistics for Nigeria: 542 confirmed cases, 19 deaths & 166 recovered.

Lagos, Ogun and FCT were effectively locked down a.l.a. the President's speech of 29th March 2020. The 14-day lockdown (in the 'first instance') took effect at 11pm on the 30th of March. Meanwhile, President Buhari has signed lockdown regulations. See the following links:

*President Buhari addresses the nation   tvcnews.tv/president-buhari-addresses-nigerians-on-covid-19/
*Buhari signs lockdown regulations   www.africanews.com/2020/03/31/nigeria-confirms.../

As at 14th April 2020, there are 373 Covid-19 cases and 11 deaths in Nigeria. The second lock-down of 14 days came into effect midnight 12th April 2020.

I am a Conflict Transformation Specialist. That is why I am particularly interested in the effect the  CoV pandemic has on conflicts, especially in Africa. This Blog post draws heavily on the write-up by International Crisis Group (ICG) titled: 'COVID-19 & Conflict: 7 trends to watch'. The following is the link to the article by ICG - https:www.crisisgroup.org/global/sb4-covid-19-and-conflict.../

It is of interest to me that ICG identified 7 trends to watch in relation to the CoV pandemic:

1) Conflict-affected populations are even more vulnerable at this time. The effect of CoV on conflict is felt more in African countries, where the standard of living is poor, and of course conflict makes the living condition of the individual worse!

2) Imminent damage to international crisis management and conflict resolution rules/mechanisms. This is because the conflict managers themselves may be down with CoV. How then can they pursue their calling of crisis management among a crisis-ridden populace engulfed in battling CoV?

3) There is a risk to social order. By the end of the CoV pandemic, social stratification, economic relations, political power, etc. would change!

4) There could be political exploitation of the crisis by some Heads of Government, without regard to the needs of the governed. This could be rife in African countries, where political systems are still evolving, and corruption is rife!

5) As regards world politics, CoV could elicit a turning point in major power relations. We now know CoV is no respecter of boundaries of nation-states, political ideology, economic policies, etc. Therefore Migration Policies (especially the 'irregular' variant) may need to change. See my Blog post: 'Africans & irregular migration' via this link - dayokusa.blogspot.com/2019/11/africans-irregular-migration.html

6) The totality of humanity is in crisis with the CoV pandemic! Rival communities and countries may be forced to help one another! The era of holding on tight to sovereignty principles may be over. CoV has engendered collective human suffering! Nobody knows when the pandemic will end and how many more casualties it'll claim...

7) Finally, conflict transformers like me, may need to evolve novel mitigation measures in this unique era of CoV...

The foregoing shows that CoV is transforming human relationships in unique ways. I am obeying the 'Stay Home' order in my little corner in Abuja. In the last few days, when I've been forced to stay at home, I have read at least three books that have been on my shelf for years! I am re-tooling myself for my conflict transformation interventions and Mediation strategies in the era of CoV. Please wish me luck...
