- John Swinston, Former Editorial Writer, New York Times
when asked to give a toast to the Free Press @ the NY Press Club
In the last fifteen years there has been a tiff between the traditional (print, television, radio, etc) and new or social media. At over 60 years old, it's a rather uphill task for me to keep up with the numerous platforms - Blogs, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Myspace, Foursquare, Instagram, 2go, WhatsApp, Mobile phone, etc. The print media feel the pinch the most. Many newspapers have been rested. A major reason is that adverts, which could be described as the oxygen that enables newspapers breathe, is in short supply. Many erstwhile clients have withdrawn their adverts from TM to popular gossip blogs, etc.
Often, it's difficult to track who is saying what in NM. Sometimes, fake names are used. Besides the feeling of anomie by the author makes her or him write many unverified/unverifiable claims. But new media can be spontaneous and easily accessible to the targeted audience. The downside is that unverified and unverifiable misinformation and disinformation may be dished out!
What then is to be done to preserve the TM? I suggest the following:
Each TM should have a niche. Even when a news item is all over NM, TM should show superiority by emphasising 'backgrounding', i.e. digging up the background to the story. TM should follow up stories professionally. TM, including the print media should make themselves visible on the internet. They should always struggle to remain relevant to their target audience
It's un-necessary for TM and NM to be at loggerheads. The sky is big enough for all birds to fly. If TM could make the needful adjustments, some of which are mentioned above, then there could be the much desired resuscitation.
