ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) & AFRICA

Photo L-R: Prof. Horst Hortner, Director, ARS Electronica Future-Lab, Oslo & Dr. Dayo Oluyemi-Kusa, Independent Consultant/Conflict Transformation Expert, Abuja

Between the 14th and 17th of August, 2018, Prof. Horst Hortner, Director, ARS Electronica Future-Lab, Oslo was in Abuja to train some Nigerians in aspects of Artificial Intelligence (AI). See for example: *https://oslolux.wordpress.com/horst-hortner-director-ars-electronica-futurelabs/
*Horst Hortner - V2_Lab for the Unstable Media - v2.nl/archive/people/horst-hortner
*What are Spaxels? - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hI6Ii1-Q6w

Prof. Hortner came on the invitation of Oscar Ekponimo, Founder, Gallery of Code and inventor of the Chowberry App that links stores to vulnerable groups with the aim of alleviating hunger. I was a participant at the workshop. Meet Oscar Ekponimo: The Nigerian alleviating hunger with his App   thenativemag.com/communities/meet-oscar-ekponimo-nigerian-alleviating-hunger-app

ARS Electronica Future-Lab (AEFL) is a think tank and Research/Development Agency. Their projects are 'proto-typical future scenarios'. AEFL has a diverse team of 40 members from different countries. Their projects are multi/inter disciplinary, comprising architects, artists, 3D-animators, engineers, physicists, media planners, etc. The fields of activity are encouragement/empowerment of young innovators, innovative products/direction, new forms of communication, new cultural experiences and community of innovation. All these activities are aimed at proposing a future society.

Innovative directions create scenarios that would leave lasting impressions in the market place. The academic partners of AEFL include University of Newcastle, MIT Media Lab, Royal College of Arts, etc. They all engage in open, inter-disciplinary and accessible science. Examples of AEFL's activities are:

*Deep Space 8k
This is super high resolution projection (imagery) that is used in NASA, Siemens, Healthineers, Cinematic Rendering, MRI, and Computers. The implication of this is that you don't have to study medicine in order to read medical imagery anymore! The experiment, 'The Sperm Race' traditionally depicts that sperms engage in survival of the fittest in order to fertilise the eggs. But the new thinking is that it is the egg that decides which sperm to admit! (AEFL 1980). This realisation has impacted human interaction, especially male-female relations.

*Spaxels (2012)
This is simulation of the Stars. Virtual and augmented reality could indeed become one! The first autonomous, self-driving cars are already with us! Autonomous robots are already entering the public space! Science creates knowledge while the Arts create meaning. There is a design thinking lifespan: Technologies - 1 year, Needs - 10 years, Vision - 100 years!

We are envisaging AI and the end of the machine. Machines of the future would not be controlled by humans, they would have their own agenda! In the future, we would have to negotiate with the machine! We would no longer be able to control the machine. AI cannot recognise anything as we know it. It can only compare an object with data fed into it! A software has been developed to trick AI. Therefore, it becomes more difficult to rely absolutely on information generated via AI! The link to the software is - https://github.com/hyperparticle/one-pixel

Uses/Potential uses of AI

*The best drone operation in the world is from Africa. Such drones can be used for gathering intelligence on terrorism, locate areas afflicted by natural disasters like flood, erosion, collapsed buildings, etc
*High end technological solution for African problems through the development of relevant/appropriate Apps, etc
*Africa has peculiar challenges which AI could solve.
*Africa may be able to show the world the way to development while solving her problems via AI.
*Africa needs to harness the usefulness of the inter/multidisciplinary nature of AI.

This is only a tip of the iceberg as regards what Prof. Hortner taught. He has so fired my imagination as regards AI that I cannot wait to visit ARS Electronica Future-Labs!

19th October, 2019

THE INTERSECTION BETWEEN AI & FASHION - WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY/VIRTUAL & AUGMENTED REALITY/PYTHON PROGRAMMING/BRAND PROJECTION/MOTION DETECTION/AESTHETICS, etc

L-R: Maria Corel, Dino Corel, Dr. Dayo Oluyemi-Kusa, Prof. Ide-Marie Corell (University of Applied Arts, Vienna), Millicent Okocha (Choreographer) & Phillipp Roessl (Rep. of Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria)

Between the 17th and 19th of October 2019, Gallery of Code (GoC) held its first ever Arts & Tech Festival in Abuja. The highlight of the event was 'Investigative Tech' by Prof. Ide-Marie Corell. According to GoC's website, 'GoC is Africa's first trans-disciplinary design lab at the intersection of Arts Science & technology for positive intervention in the society.

At the grand finale of the three-day intensive workshop, aesthetics and high tech elements blended to form a new and contemporary landscape. I was enthralled by a particular dress. LED lights were integrated with a micro-controller fixed to the back of the model. The aesthetic multi-colour bulbs were controlled  so that they come 'alive' when the LED lights detect the breathing of the model!

This was indeed another successful and interesting outing for Gallery of Code.
